From the exotic to common domestic pets a plea has been made for keen knitters across north Norfolk to help fill out a specially designed Noah's Ark.

Volunteers at John Grooms Court care home in Norwich, a home for adults with disabilities which is run by national disability charity Livability, have launched a new charity knitted project to reproduce a model of Noah's Ark.

This is the third knitting project to be undertaken by the volunteering group for the care home, Friends of John Grooms Court, and will be unveiled in February 2016.

The project is being done in co-operation with the Norfolk Knitters and Stitchers.

Friends chair Laurel Walpole, who runs the Mannington estate in north Norfolk, is appealing to knitters to help.

She said pigs and ducks top the list followed by zebras, crocodiles and elephants.

She said: 'We are sure the ark should have all animals – the more unusual the better so final plea for 2015 for more handmade knitted and sewn toys, all to be displayed and sold in aid of the charity.'

Animals and blue sea squares are beginning to flood in ready for the first showing at the Forum in Norwich in February. The wooden ark will have a quilted roof coming from the Drayton Quilters Group.

Proceeds from the Noah's Ark project will go towards the Livability Home Design Appeal, which is improving residents' living spaces in Livability care homes.

The Friends of John Grooms Court have raised large sums through their textile projects including a 15ft knitted Christmas tree, which is on show this year in Aylsham Church,

The Knitted Christmas Tree was created in 2010, with 600 knitters making 4,600 green squares for leaves and nearly 2,000 tree decorations.

It was displayed in a variety of locations in Norwich and helped raise nearly £10,000 for John Grooms Court.

Another of their projects was a ten foot tall, six-sided pergola which boasts a wooden framework covered with knitted squares and hundreds of colourful flowers, leaves and wildlife.
