Seven average speed cameras have been put up on the A17 between Sutton Bridge, on the Norfolk/Lincolnshire border, and the Pullover roundabout in King's Lynn.

It comes after care worker Laura Pesterfield, 21, from Boston, died from injuries after her car was struck by a lorry at the Station Road junction with the A17, at Terrington St Clement, on December 21.

She was travelling with her two nephews in the car. Both children were taken to hospital but later discharged.

Anne Pointin, safety camera team manager for Norfolk police, said the units should be operational in the next two months, and would identify drivers exceeding the 60mph limit by taking an average speed between any two points.

She added: 'The project is the result of the high collision history on that piece of road, which is seen as a high priority site. The decision was made by Norfolk Safety Camera Partnership in conjunction with Norfolk County Council and Highways.'

West Norfolk councillor for Terrington St Clement, Sheila Young said: 'Each time there's a tragedy on that road they have put in some measures to enhance the safety aspect; nothing big, as there's no money.

'This is an ill-conceived junction which is difficult to manoeuvre especially for new drivers and those not familiar with the area.

'The safety cameras might help. There has been to be something done even if it's just a progression of small measures.'

A police investigation into the crash is ongoing.
