More than 200 people gathered at Britain's most easterly beacon, as families in Lowestoft gathered to mark the Queen's 90th birthday.

And there were cheers and loud applause as God Save The Queen echoed out around the Royal Green in Lowestoft, as the beacon was lit as part of the national celebrations to honour the UK's longest reigning monarch.

The beacon at the Royal Green was lit following a speech by Bruce Provan, chairman of Waveney District Council.

Praising the people of Lowestoft who had turned out in the bracing coastal winds, Mr Provan read out a message from the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles. He said: 'I am delighted that so many people throughout the United Kingdom are coming together to light beacons in celebration of my mother, The Queen's 90th birthday. It is a wonderful gesture, which I know has deeply touched Her Majesty.'

A short speech from the Mayor of Lowestoft, Stephen Ardley had opened proceedings. Mr Ardley said: 'I am pleased with the turnout tonight, and it is has been a great pleasure to meet so many people and be part of more than 1,000 beacons that are being lit across the land.'

With the 1st Carlton cubs group among the crowds, speaking afterwards Mr Provan said it was 'very much an honour' as chairman of the council to be involved in the celebrations.
