Thetford turned out in numbers to wish the Queen happy birthday as a celebratory beacon was lit.

Mayor Robert Kybird welcomed more than 100 people to the town's Market Square tonight to witness the beacon's lighting just after 7.30pm.

But technical difficulties kept them waiting, with the beacon refusing to ignite.

After several attempts - and much laughter - the flame lit and a chorus of 'Happy Birthday' was led by the mayor.

Before the lighting, a bar had been provided in the Guildhall and children activities were put on by Sharon Thompson's EPIC group.

Mr Kybird said it was important to recognise Her Majesty's contribution.

'90 years is a good life for anyone and our Queen has shown stamina to do the job for 63 years.

'The support we have this evening is from those who are enthusiastic royalists.

'We've also provided entertainment and activities for the much younger generation and hope that they will continue to support our British traditions long into the future,' he said.
