As part of our regular series of profiles on the region's Young Farmers' Club (YFC) members, agricultural tyre-fitter TOM CARTER talks about keeping the wheels of industry turning.

In the job I do, a normal working day doesn't really occur too often.

I'm normally out and about before 7am attending to tyre-related breakdowns which customers have called in. These jobs can vary from your average ride-on mower up to the biggest piece of farm machinery and everything in between. The majority of my time is spent on the road in my van attending customer sites, whether it is to do a job or just meet with them to discuss any upcoming work they will need doing.

At this time of year the bulk of my farming customers are beginning to prepare the land for spring work, which increases my workload, as machinery hasn't been used over the winter period. This is an important time of year as correct preparation hopefully means a trouble-free spring for both them and me.

The best part about my job is there is so much variety. I see lots of different people every day, whether it's customers out and about on the road or dealing with people in our depot with their car-related problems.

I have worked for Kingsway Tyres for three years but have been in the tyre industry for 14 years. I enjoy the challenge the job gives me and intend on doing it for many years to come.

Being involved with Young Farmers has taught me that there is a lot more to the organisation than I first thought. For instance, so many people are from all walks of life and not just a farming background, which gives such variety in the social side of the clubs. Getting to know people and making new friends is one of the best aspects of YFC. The support you get from the county staff based at Easton and Otley College is second to none, whether you have a major or minor problem or just need a chat, they are always there to help.

In the calendar year of YFC there are so many things to look forward to, ranging from getting a tuxedo on for a club dinner dance or finding the wackiest fancy dress for a club social. A personal highlight of mine, and one not to be missed, is the Annual YFC Convention which is in Blackpool this year and looming ever closer.

Young Farmers is not just about tractors, there are so many different aspects ranging from competitions, travel options and so much more. It was one of the best decisions I have made. I have met so many people and got so much out of it including friendships and business contacts.

Acle YFC meets at Stokesby Village Hall on Tuesday evenings. For more information, contact the county office on 01603 731307.
