They are used to reward good behaviour and a Norfolk horse sanctuary is asking for donations of carrots to give its deserving animals a special treat.
Redwings' visitor centres at Aylsham and Caldecott, near Fritton, are providing 'carrot drop' stops for visitors next month. The charity is joining in the celebrations for International Carrot Day which takes place on April 4.
Redwings' head of fundraising, Gemma Walpole, said: 'Small, wonky or knobbly – our horses and donkeys adore carrots. With 1500 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules in our care nationally, that's a lot of mouths to feed so we hope our visitors will take this opportunity to think of us this International Carrot Day. Don't neglect your wonky veg, give our residents a well-deserved treat instead!'
Carrots are given by Redwings staff to praise good behaviour or as a healthy snack for rescued horses and donkeys.
Carrot Day celebrations are being held at Redwings' visitor centres from Friday, April 1 to Monday, April 4.
