More than 500 pupils, at Poplars Community Primary School, Lowestoft, took part in the Summer of Sport Festival- a scheme aiming to build self-esteem, as well as health and fitness through activities not normally seen in the school sports hall.

Phil Aves, change manager at Lowestoft Rising, presented medals on Monday (July 18) to pupils in recognition of their achievements.

'We have been promoting the Golden Mile sporting initiative in all the primary schools but Poplars wanted to something extra.

'So with our support they were able to provide three weeks worth of additional sporting activities such as archery and handball,' he said.

The sporting initiative was developed by staff at the primary school, with the help of sports coaching organisation Premier Sport, after it was observed personal resilience and self-esteem were sometimes barriers to learning.

Through the financial support of Lowestoft Rising staff were able to deliver a programme of activities to enable all pupils to experience sporting success

Headteacher Lynsey Holzer said: 'Our children have responded well to the challenges and all children, in our school of 520, have earned a medal.

'We are challenging the children to continue exercising throughout the summer holiday and we will continue with an increased programme of sport in the autumn term.

'We are thrilled with the response from children and parents.'

Proudly wearing his medal, year 5 pupil, James, 8, added: 'It has been a lot of fun and I really enjoyed trying out fencing.

'I really like all sports, but especially football, as I get to have fun with my friends and I will definitely be doing lots of sport over the summer holidays.'
