The Saturday, December 3 event which will run from 10.30am to 6pm looks set to draw hundreds of people into the town centre.

The event will feature live music, circus entertainers, a candlelit procession, carol singing and nativity scenes. There will also be street theatre, a Punch and Judy show and a children's 'play factory'.

Fran Young, chairman of the organising committee, said: 'Wynterfest is about bringing the community together, and all the benefits that go with that which make the town a better place to live.

'Hopefully it will bring new people into the town as well.

'We've got quite a bit going for us in Wymondham, and it's a lovely place to celebrate Christmas.'

Wymondham High School is putting together a band that will raise money for the Star Throwers.

There will also be a second stage at the town green area, where the South Norfolk Youth Symphonic will play along with musician James Summerhill.

A Christmas tree festival will take place at Wymondham Abbey and run through until early January. The town's Methodist church will host a crib festival throughout the weekend, and there will be a flea market at the ex-servicemen's hall.

Arts and crafts will be on sale at Becket's Chapel, and the library will host a Wynter Time Travellers event, bringing memorabilia from past Christmases together.

This display will include the Christmas archive from the Wymondham Lions Club going back to 1971.

And rather than there being one moment when all the Christmas lights will be switched on, different parts of the town will be lit up gradually.

Mrs Young said: 'We hope people will come down and have a great time in Wymondham.
