Instead of changing platforms, couples could soon be exchanging vows at one of Norfolk's heritage railways.

The Mid Norfolk Railway, which runs between Dereham and Wymondham, is hoping to put them on the right track for the best start to married life by applying for a licence to hold wedding ceremonies and civil partnerships in its tea room at the Dereham station.

With couples able to say 'I do' at the station it means their whole wedding day can be held in one place.

The railway already offers the fully restored 1950s station as a reception venue with the option of taking a steam or diesel train ride through the Norfolk countryside.

But the actual ceremonies have had to be held elsewhere, either at Wymondham Abbey or other local churches or venues.

Marketing manager Charlie Robinson said they had been to several wedding fairs over the past year to see how they could improve their service and had several requests for exchanging vows at the station itself.

'There was quite a lot of interest from couples keen to spend the whole day with us,' he said. 'We have had several bookings where people have got married and then come to us for afternoon tea and on to a reception somewhere else and we have held several receptions as well.

'We are very flexible and fit in with what the couple want and people have said they want to get married here so we are in the process of applying for the licence.'

The Mid Norfolk Railway has applied to Norfolk County Council for the licence and to Breckland Council for occasional change of use of the tearoom and they hope to be successful in time for bookings next year.

'It is a completely different thing for a couple to do,' said Mr Robinson. 'I think it does appeal to a lot of people.'

Perhaps the only question remaining for the bride will be - will her dress have a long train?
