It is the end of an era as the landlords of a much-loved coastal town pub have called last orders for the final time.

For 17 years Derek and Teresa Baggott have been familiar faces as publicans at The Red Lion pub in Southwold.

However, the couple are soon set to pull their last pint as they leave the pub, situated on South Green, on March 1.

Mrs Baggott, 56, said: 'We have met so many people and friends both locals and holidaymakers, from across the country who return year on year.

'In this trade there is something new happening everyday, but you don't know what will happen next - that's what we like about it most.'

She added: 'But we have taken this as far as we can and now it is an opportunity for somebody new to step in.

'Also we would like to discover what it is like not working nights and weekends!

'And we will be spending more time with our family, we have eight grandchildren so it will be nice to see them more.'

Mrs Baggott, who is a former mayor of Southwold, said the couple plan to take a more active role in the family shop – Clancy's – located in Station Road, Southwold.

But with the end of one era comes the dawning of another as incoming landlords, Michael Beck and Blanche Thornton, are due to commence their tenure this March.

Mr Baggott, 51, offered words of advice to his successors: 'Our message to Michael and Blanche is to enjoy yourselves.

'It can be hectic and challenging but you have to enjoy it.

'Obviously they will make changes, as that is only natural, and put their stamp on their place in the same way we did - but it's all good for the town to have fresh ideas.'

Mrs Baggott added: 'I will definitely miss not seeing the people and hearing the noise - the pub has been like our front room and the quietness will be very strange.

'We would also like to thank all our staff and customers for their support over the years.'
