People in America to Madagascar and the Cayman Islands to Australia will be participating in Walk for Mandy Events this month in memory of

Mandy Swift, who lived in Wells.

Mrs Swift was 54 when she died in September last year, just five weeks after she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Walk for Mandy was originally just to be held at the Holkham Estate on March 25 - a walk organised by Mrs Swift's husband Robin and friend Nick Clare.

But word spread and friends and former colleagues around the world have organised their own Walks for Mandy.

There are 15 co-ordinators overseeing events in Miami, USA; the Netherlands; the Cayman Islands; Kathmandu, in Nepal; Australia; Thailand and Madagascar. There is also a Ski for Mandy in, France, a Roller-skate for Mandy in Germany and a Swim for Mandy in St Kitts, the West Indies.

Mr Clare said: 'More than 225 people are taking part so far, and numbers are growing.

'Mandy was a truly amazing woman who was always there for friends and family.

'She gave up nursing to help her son through school when he was diagnosed with dyslexia. She retrained as a special needs teacher and ran a successful business devising and selling teaching aids to help other dyslexic children.

'Any excuse to have fun, Mandy and Robin were there. They were such wonderful company and such good friends, it's no surprise to anyone who knows the family that so many people want to show their love and support.'

Robin and Mandy had not long moved into their new house in Wells and were looking forward to their daughter Hannah's wedding when Mandy was diagnosed. She died before the wedding, at St Mary's Church, Holme.

Mr Clare said: 'It's hard to believe she's gone.

'We hope the Walk for Mandy will be a joyful event, bringing all who loved her together, no matter where they are.'
