The career of a disgraced former Norfolk teacher lies in ruins after he admitted a string of sex offences against girls spanning more than a decade.

Glyn Jones, 57, was a high school teacher in Norfolk when he committed most of the seven offences against six different victims, who were 16 or under at the time.

The indecent assaults happened between 1979 and 1996, and took place while he worked as a respected and popular PE teacher, with one assault taking place when he was 19-year-old trainee teacher, Norwich Crown Court heard.

During his career Jones taught at Lynn Grove High School in Gorleston, and Hellesdon High School, near Norwich, before he later moved to Australia.

Jones was charged with the offences in January last year following an investigation by Norfolk Police.

Jones initially denied the offences but changed his pleas just before his trial was due to start.

Richard Kelly, prosecuting, said Jones abused his position of trust to sexually assault the young girls, and groomed them by buying gifts and flowers and making the young girls feel special.

One girl, who was about 15 or 16, was taken in his car to Mousehold Heath where he sexually assaulted her. He also sexually assaulted another girl, who was about 14, on a school trip to an amusement park.

One victim told how she was now a mother with daughters of her own and realised how 'incredibly wrong' his behaviour was.

Mr Kelly said another girl was sexually assaulted by Jones on a school ski trip when she went to his room.

Matthew McNiff, for Jones, said he accepted it was an abuse of trust but said any sentence served in a UK jail would keep him away from his family, who were living in Australia.

He said Jones had not offended for the past 20 years and said his career at a teacher, which he held dear, was now at an end: 'He has suffered a catastrophic loss of his character.'

He said the fact his actions had brought about the destruction of his family and career weighed heavily on him.

Jones is due to be sentenced on Tuesday, August 22.
