Breckland councillors paid tribute on Friday, September 1 to merchant seamen when they raised the Red Ensign flag at the council office in Dereham.
Merchant Navy Day is recognised annually on September 3. It marks the date of the first major British maritime casualty during the Second World War when in 1939 the SS Athenia was torpedoed and sunk.
Breckland council chair, Kate Millbank said: 'By raising the flag we are honouring the sacrifices of the brave merchant seamen who kept us supplied with food and other essential items during two world wars, and demonstrating our appreciation of the vital role they continue to play in the country's prosperity.
'Their's is a hidden service and we hope by raising the Red Ensign flag, we will help gain wider recognition for their work, both past and present.'
The council joined other authorities in calling for wider recognition.
