More GCSE pupils in Suffolk passed English and maths than previously expected as praise continued to pour in after results day.

Every school has now submitted results to Suffolk County Council (SCC), which has confirmed 64 per cent of students scored at least a grade 4 in both key subjects.

Although results cannot be compared to previous years due to the reforms, it is a three-point percentage annual rise. The figure was first reported as 63pc last Thursday after only 80pc of schools issued data. Gordon Jones, education cabinet member at SCC, said the results were 'fantastic'. He said: 'Through our Raising the Bar programme, we continue to work with, and challenge, schools to drive up educational attainment.'

With a number of schools making significant gains, Ormiston Denes Academy in Lowestoft attained its best ever grades as 53pc of pupils achieved the threshold for English and maths – a rise of 21pc on last year.
