The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) will build a new facility and demolish its current site at the Grand Hotel, in Pakefield Road, Lowestoft.

The agency received unanimous approval from Waveney District Council's planning committee last week.

George Eustice, Minister of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, believes that once complete these changes will 'help bolster research and understanding of sea life'.

Mr Eustice said: 'Cefas has always been at the forefront of marine research and innovation, and I'm pleased this new centre is one step closer to reality.

'It will solidify our position as a world leader in marine science and a champion of sustainable fishing.'

The project, set to reduce running costs as well as provide a workspace more conducive for scientific collaboration, will begin in November.
