It is a fruity red ale named after the night sky's brightest star.

And now Sirius Dog Star, which is brewed by Besthorpe-based Wolf Brewery, has won double gold at the Society of Independent Brewers' (SIBA) eastern region awards.

Will Edwards, head brewer at Wolf, said he was thrilled with the honour, which was announced during an festival at Elgood's Brewery in Wisbech on September 21.

Mr Edwards said: 'It is very pleasing that our craft ales continue to be recognized as excellent by industry experts and our peers.

'Beating off competition from almost 250 of the eastern region's best beers is a tribute to our recipes which have been developed over many years, the quality of the ingredients we use and the skill and dedication of the team at Wolf.

'I am especially delighted that Sirius Dog Star won awards for both the bottles and casks showing that we maintain the quality of the product across different container types and that we also won an award for our wheat beer, Straw Dog, showing that our beers are high quality right across our range.'

Wolf Brewery was established in 1996 in Attleborough and moved to a larger site at Besthorpe in 2013.

The firm brews craft ales in casks and bottles using Norfolk ingredients and water from its own bore hole.

The region's other winning drops included DewHooper from Hindringham's Norfolk Brewhouse, which won gold in a 'small pack standard lager and pilsners' category, and Encore by Great Yarmouth's Lacons Brewery, which scooped the top prize in a 'cask standard bitters and pale ales' class.

Buster Grant, SIBA chairman, said: 'Judges had a tough job separating the pack as the standard was extremely high once again.

'Lucky beer festival attendees at Elgood's were able to try this and other award-winning beers immediately after the competition, something which is great for brewers too as they get to put their beers into the hands of real beer-lovers.'
