Emperor penguins will be the focus of an upcoming lecture in a south Norfolk village.
The eighth annual Bunwell lecture will feature guest speaker Dr Peter Fretwell, geographic information officer for the British Antarctic Survey.
Dr Fretwell will talk about the fascinating yearly cycle of the lordly flightless birds, who form colonies on sea-ice in the extreme conditions and perpetual darkness of the Antarctic winter.
The birds leave their breeding grounds by early summer as their chicks fledge, and the sea-ice melts removing all evidence of their colonies.
Emperors were considered difficult to study until 2009, when a chance discovery found they could be identified by satellite imagery.
Tickets for the Friday, October 6 event at Bunwell Church are £7.50 in advance or £10 on the night, and can be bought from Sue Pennell on 01953 788283 or email sue.pennell@live.co.uk.
