Norfolk police have warned motorists to take care this morning after strong winds left debris on many roads from falling branches.

Police said 'numerous' trees and branches had been removed from the roads but that it was possible that debris would still be found in places.

A spokesperson said officers had received reports of a fallen tree in Kilverstone Road near Thetford and were on their way to the scene.

'We have been advised that a chainsaw will be needed so motorists should avoid the area for now.'

Weatherquest forecaster Adam Dure said winds across the region had gusted up to speeds of 40 to 50 mph overnight.

He said: 'Around Norwich the wind was gusting up to 40mph and in areas closer to the North Norfolk coast it was recorded at speeds of up to 50mph.

'It is not unusual for this time of the year and we expect the winds to decrease through the day.

'They have already dropped to gust speeds of 30mph.'

He said 'light winds' were forecast for tomorrow with 'spots' of rain in the south of the region.

'Today and tomorrow should mostly be dry,' he said.
