Taking part in Scouts or Guides is an important rite of passage and a treasured memory for many.

But girls in central Norfolk are missing out on the chance to get involved, due to a lack of adult helpers signing up to run sessions.

And Girlguiding in Norfolk is running a recruitment campaign to encourage more people to get involved - including in Dereham.

With a growing waiting list and not enough volunteers to offer these girls a place, Girlguiding is encouraging the residents of Dereham and the surrounding villages to give up their time so girls between the ages of 4 to 18, can have adventures, make friends, build confidence and develop skills they will use throughout their lives.

Whether it's trying abseiling for the first time, having a go at science experiments or taking action on the issues that matter to them, Girlguiding empowers a generation of girls and young women to find their place in the world.

If you're someone who would like to help and inspire girls, then volunteering with Girlguiding is the chance to do just that.

Girlguiding Central Norfolk offers a variety of flexible volunteering roles so people can find something that fits with the time they have to give, from helping out at a meeting once a month, to going along to support at weekend events or running occasional sessions with different groups.

Susan Newton, a local Guider said: 'I became a Guide Leader as Guiding makes me smile. No matter how challenging my day, no matter how tired or grumpy I feel Guiding sorts me out.

'I enjoy working with young people, I enjoy making them smile and I enjoy watching them grow and develop.

'In my time I have been a Guide, Brownie and Senior Section Leader, and I have made amazing friends and experienced amazing opportunities. It also gave me skills that I now use in my daily work life.'

Grace, a Guide said: ' I love coming to Guides every week and seeing my friends.

'I have met so many new people outside of school and learnt so many new things that I wouldn't have had the chance to try elsewhere. It's a great experience and lots of fun.'
