For some Sunderland fans, it is a prize that will bring back many bitter memories of the infamous Milk Cup final.

In 1985, the Black Cats suffered a 1-0 defeat against Norwich City at Wembley following an own goal by defender Gordon Chisholm.

And that memory was at the forefront of Sunderland supporter Bob West's mind when he received a signed Canaries shirt in a competition.

The 60-year-old, from Durham, won the item three years ago and has kept it in storage ever since.

But he is now wanting to donate it free-of-charge to a young Norwich fan who will be able to appreciate it more.

Mr West said: 'It is a fantastic memento, but I am actually a Sunderland fan who never got over our 1-0 defeat against Norwich in the Milk Cup final.

'I don't want anything for it, I just think someone should have it as they will appreciate it more than me.'

The retired civil servant won the shirt in May 2015 after entering his name into a competition with the Norwich-based insurance giant Aviva.

He was initially awarded tickets to see Norwich play, but was unable to make it to Carrow Road and received the top instead.

'I remember thinking 'oh look, what have I won', and then [after seeing the top] 'oh for god's sake...',' Mr West said.

'I thought I would keep it as a souvenir and it has been in storage since then.'

Mr West said he had the idea to donate the item after hearing about the young City fan who missed her first Norwich game to attend a sleep over.

He contacted BBC Radio 5 live with the intention of sending it to her family, but did not have much luck.

The shirt features the signatures of the 2014/15 promotion-winning squad and is in a size medium.

It comes with an official letter from Aviva confirming its validity.

One of Norwich's most memorable games against the Black Cats was during the Football League Cup Final, billed as the Milk Cup Final, on March 24, 1985.

Played out at Wembley Stadium, Sunderland lost after Chisholm deflected midfielder Asa Hartford's shot past keeper Chris Turner.

Mr West said while he never made it to the match, he has a programme from the game.
