Aiden Brett, from Diss, had been woken in the early hours of the morning by lightning and gale force wind which by a stroke of luck enabled him to spot the flames at a neighbour's house.

'If it hadn't been for him, I don't know if anyone would have noticed the fire,' said Aiden's grandmother, Meg, who he was staying with at the time.

'He told me a house was on fire and I said 'don't be daft - it is the lightning.' But lo and behold he was right, there was a fire.

'I ran downstairs in my dressing gown to wake my neighbour up and told my daughter to ring the fire brigade.'

The bad weather had caused power cuts across the area resulting in more than 49,000 homes left without electricity and a huge strain was put on the emergency services.

Yet, within minutes an engine had appeared on the scene in Valley Road, Tasburgh, and identified that some sheds at the back of a garden had burst into flames.

They were swiftly extinguished which prevented further damage being caused.

It is not yet clear what caused the fire, but without Aiden's lucky spot the situation could have been much worse.

Despite the flames being quenched, the excitement was not over for the Tasburgh Pre-school pupil who was then lucky enough to meet his own heroes.

Mrs Brett said: 'He asked me if he could go out to meet the firemen and they congratulated him on his quick thinking and bravery.

'He went to pre-school later in the day and was telling everyone he was a hero.

'We are all so proud of him for knowing what to do.'

Aiden, who lives with his mum Shannon and is the oldest of three with two younger sisters Alyssa, two, and Isabelle, four months, was also treated to an extra special box of chocolates by his grandmother for being her little hero.
