A mother has launched a crusade to improve pedestrian crossing measures near her Norwich home.

Lisa Stannard, 27 of Heigham Street, is campaigning for pedestrian crossings to be introduced at her road's junction with Mile Cross Road.

The mother-of-one has set up a petition for the crossing, with the help of friend Holly Smith, and already has more than 600 people in support of her campaign.

She has also garnered the support of two nearby schools - Nelson Infant School and Wensum Junior School - whose pupils use the road on their way to school.

Mrs Stannard said: 'I have lived on Heigham Street for more than four years now and from my own experience it is so difficult to cross the road.

'There is a four-way traffic light system for vehicles on the roads, but no real provisions for pedestrians who have to time crossing with the lights.'

Mrs Stannard, whose seven-year-old daughter Sophie attends Nelson Infant School, said the junction was an accident waiting to happen for pedestrians.

She added: 'My daughter is a very caring little girl so she is just as worried for her classmates as I am.

'In an ideal world a full pelican crossing would be the answer. We teach our children to look out for the green man, however to cross this road we have to go against everything we have told them.'

A spokesman for Norwich City Council said: 'We are aware of a petition which could be presented to the city and county councils, who have joint responsibility for the city's roads at Norwich highways agency committee.

'The next meeting is on June 7 and the one following is September 20.

'It is the city council's feeling that a pedestrian crossing - which is likely to cost around £350,000 - is a priority for the area and as such our intention is to bid for funding for this next financial year.'

Mrs Stannard has also organised a public meeting at which people can offer their support for her campaign.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 8 at Wensum Community Centre on Hotblack Road from 7pm.
