Why is freezing old bananas good for sustainability? The answer to this and more can be found this weekend at a family friendly free festival at The Forum in Norwich.
One Planet Norwich Festival, now in its fourth year, is designed to encourage people in Norfolk to live more sustainably.
Ways this can be achieved are available to explore in a variety of stalls and activities, from The Junk Orchestra, which uses percussion instruments made of recycled or discarded materials, to fashion shows with outfits made out of sustainable materials, to a bicycle course encouraging small children to learn to cycle.
Claire Tullet, event organiser and environmental strategy officer and Norwich City Council said: 'The purpose of the festival is to encourage people to take time to think about ways they can make small changes to their lives to live more sustainably and live within the One Planet model.'
On the stalls is Maria Willis, 63, from Norwich, volunteer at Plan East Save, a campaign by the County Council to help people in Norfolk reduce food waste by planning their shopping and meals more effectively.
She said: 'We provide things like tips and plans and recipes. It also encourages people to be a bit healthier.
'My favourite idea is based on the fact lots of people throw away old bananas because they go off so easily, but if you peel and freeze them they are delicious - it's like eating banana ice cream!'
The event also featured stalls selling sustainable food and clothes, and even local sustainable energy, in the form of Norwich Community Solar, a community-owned cooperative with the aim of increasing the amount of solar power in Norwich and sharing the benefits among the community.
Kevin Maguire, Labour Councillor for Wensum, 65, said: 'I'm really behind this wonderful initiative. It is part of the profile of the city to be environmentally conscious. The people of Norwich are so switched on generally that it is part of the Norwich culture.'
Wendy Edline, 63, from Norwich, said: 'This is the first time for me here. Parents will come here thinking it is just a fun day out but they don't realise how much their children will be learning and how important it is. I wouldn't have stopped at the Forum but I'm loving it.'
One Planet Norwich Festival is running on June 9 and 10 from 10am-4pm.
