Mrs Carter turned 100 on Saturday and enjoyed a birthday lunch and cake at her home in Bowthorpe Care Village with loved ones including her son John Carter and granddaughter Anna Carter.

She also received cards from the Queen and from Esther McVey, the secretary of state for work and pensions.

Her son John Carter said: 'I'm very proud that mum has reached such an age. She thoroughly enjoyed the day.'

Mrs Carter, whose maiden name was Evans, grew up in Hemblington and later moved to Norwich with her husband Robert. She lived at Furze Road, in Thorpe St Andrew, for many years before moving to Bowthorpe Care Village. For a large part of her working life she worked at Joy's in Norwich's Ber Street. During the Second World War she was a telephone operator at Telephone House in St Giles Street and in later life she worked in market research.
