The Canaries’ sporting director aims to sit down with new head coach Daniel Farke next week to ‘push the button’ on potential new recruits.

Marley Watkins is expected to seal a free transfer, when his contract at Barnsley officially expires, and Webber wants City to be active in the early part of the close-season.

“We will sit down next week and assess the squad and what we have got, and then assess what we can do quickly, in terms of maybe lads who are out of contract or loan signings,” he said. “Now we have Daniel here we have always said he will make the final decision and that will allow us to push the button on some of those guys. If we can do a couple of bits reasonably early that would be great. I think we can do some bits of work very quickly. We are ready to go on that and now Daniel is here we can press ahead.”

Webber reiterated City’s ability to compete at the richer end of the market will hinge on exits.

“Steve (Stone) has spoken about the financial situation and we need to sell to bring in players,” he said. “Unfortunately in that scenario you are waiting for someone to come and buy a player and that can be a quick process or it can be August 31. There has been nothing in that area yet, in terms of approaches. A lot of clubs have only just finished their season; take the Premier League for example and the play-offs are only just finishing this weekend.

“Traditionally English clubs take a bit of time at the end of the season and go straight away on holiday. Now they have seen we have made the head coach appointment that might spark a bit more movement. I would hope in that area it is going to be sooner rather than later.

“Everyone in this game has a price. Ronaldo and Paul Pogba have a price. They all do. The aim is to keep our best players together and the ones we want. But it never becomes an ideal situation where you sell a set of players you don’t want and bring in the set you do want. Very rarely does it happen that seamlessly. Sometimes things happen you don’t expect. We might get an injury in pre-season and you have to react. Some players might over-perform or under-perform and it is about adapting.”
