Unlike most of the Chelsea players, match-winner Tammy Abraham had first-hand knowledge of the danger Norwich City posed to Chelsea at Carrow Road – and expected a tough match.

The England Under-21 international had tasted defeat to Norwich twice during his successful loan with Aston Villa last season, scoring 25 Championship goals.

He started the 2-1 loss in Norfolk but was rested to protect an injury issue ahead of the play-offs as City wrapped up the title with a 2-1 win at Villa Park on the final day, so was wary of Daniel Farke's attacking side.

"We knew coming here was never going to be easy," Abraham said. "I've played against Norwich before and coming here is always tough but we started off on the front foot and we knew we had to because if we let them start sharply then they will score goals.

"We started off well, had a few chances but conceded two goals and came in to the dressing room and said, listen, there's going to be more chances, let's stay in the game, be patient, defend well, and we'll get another goal."

After an excellent strike in just the third minute had finally opened the Blues' academy product's account for his boyhood club, a fine individual effort midway through the second half earned a 3-2 victory.

Abraham is one of the young players benefitting from the transfer embargo which has restricted Frank Lampard since his arrival as manager, and the striker admitted earning a first win for the club legend had released some pressure.

"I wouldn't say relief but we knew we needed to win," he added, speaking to BT Sport. "The first two games of the season were never going to be easy (against Manchester United and Leicester)

"So this game was very important to us for getting three points, which was massive for us. So yeah it is kind of a relief.

There was added relief for Abraham in scoring, having had the crucial penalty saved in the Uefa Super Cup shootout loss to Liverpool recently.

"It's something I've always dreamed about doing," he added with a big smile. "I've always wanted to play for my childhood club and obviously be in the first team and score. That's what I've done, so I'm over the moon."
