Traditionally, Albert Square on Christmas is a place of death, divorce and despair.

However, Albert Square - Great Yarmouth - will be a far difference place to its fictional namesake, as a hotel shows it gratitude to the emergency services.

On Christmas Day, any on-duty emergency personnel will be treated to complimentary tea, coffee and turkey sandwiches at the Comfort Hotel, as they work their Yuletide shifts.

Paul Debenham, hotel sales manager, said: “It’s never nice being away from family on Christmas and the emergency services do so much for the community, so this is our way of saying thank you to them.

“Whenever we have had to call them, they have always been polite and professional, and they have a bit of a short straw at Christmas.

“Anybody on duty - whether they are police, ambulance, fire or coastguard - can just pop in and will be made welcome.”
