Plants from some of the best growers in the region will be on offer at Bungay’s annual garden street market this weekend.
The market will see more than 100 stalls offering a variety of plants and flowers lining Earsham Street, with visitors invited to enjoy a day of buying, while listening to live music and enjoying the food on offer from stallholders and the town’s many cafes, pubs and restaurants.
Running from 9am to 4pm this Sunday, May 13, the street market is organised by the Bungay Events and Business Association (BEBA) with the aim of not only bringing visitors to the town but also to raise funds to donate to other Bungay attractions such as the Christmas lights switch on each year.
Didy Ward, chairman of BEBA, said: “The garden street market always marks the beginning of the gardening season with visitors from all across the region flocking to experience a day admiring and buying plants from some of the best growers in the region.
“However despite the market always being a sell-out in terms of pitches, with a waiting list of stall holders wanting to take part, the markets we run these days barely make a profit.
“The reason for this is that since Suffolk County Council brought in a more stringent requirement for putting out the road closure and diversion signs a few years ago, we have been forced to use firms that have the correct qualification level to do this – and they are expensive.”
However BEBA is now teaming up with the Beccles and Halesworth business associations to train up individuals in each town to achieve the correct qualification and to pool together to purchase the appropriate signs for use at future events.
Ms Ward added: “It is this kind of DIY attitude that will help all of our market towns continue to deliver great days out for visitors.
“And the garden street market in Bungay on Sunday promises to be just that – a great day out!”
