Fire crews from Littleport were called twice to rescue motorists stranded in deep water at Wash Road, Welney, yesterday.

Police, too, got involved with one officer posting on the East Cambs Police Facebook page: “The closure of the road has been clearly sign posted on the highway and it is an offence to disobey the signs and breach the cordon”

Fellow motorists chipped in to condemn those drivers who had tried to get through the Wash Road.

“Unbelievable that people try,” said one driver.

Another wrote: “And there’s me thinking that road signs were meant to be obeyed! “Oh well, guess I can ignore that ‘Highway Code’ thing.”

The police Facebook page added: “An incident was raised earlier today where colleagues in the fire & rescue were contacted by a driver in distress who entered the flood water and could not get his vehicle out.

“We strongly advise all motorists to avoid Wash Road, Welney and plan alternative routes.”

One other driver said; “The electronic sign just before the A142/A10 roundabout was reading 12” of water. Although it would help if all the signs worked.”

Police have not confirmed if either of the motorists rescued from the waters will be prosecuted.

The road has now been closed for nearly a week because of flooding.

MP Steve Barclay and fellow MPs Sir Henry Bellingham and Liz Truss will discuss flooding at a meeting in Downham Market today. Efforts to improve the road at Welney will be among issues debated.
