The Duke of Edinburgh is not expected to take part in this weekend's Sandringham Horse Driving Trials, event insiders said today.
The Duke, now aged 86, showed age is no barrier when he came first in the dressage and second overall at last year's event.
Carriage driving is one of few equestrian sports where competitors of all ages compete on an equal footing.
But last night one source said: “He will be about but he is not competing this year.”
There will be about 80 people taking part each day, today and Saturday, with dressage today and a marathon on Saturday. On Sunday there is a club event with about 35 people taking part.
