Police were today warning businesses about a bogus detective contacting shops and asking for credit card transactions over the phone.
A man called at least three florists' shops between 1 and 2pm this afternoon, claiming to be a Det Con or a Det Sgt Edwards from Suffolk Police. He told staff he was investigating credit card fraud and would require details of transactions.
But police enquires in Norfolk have established this is not the case and this man is suspected of attempting to fraudulently obtain credit card details by phone.
Police spokeswoman Beth Manning said: “Though we have had calls from florists only, we are advising anyone who receives a phone call such as this to refrain from giving the offender any information and to contact police immediately.
“We are currently liaising with colleagues in Suffolk and would advise anyone who receives a call asking for financial information to contact the organisation or company concerned to double-check the caller's identity.”
