An electric car designed and built by youngsters from Wisbech has powered its way through to a national endurance competition final.

The aluminium vehicle, Twin Cambs, built by Wisbech Grammar School pupils, has qualified for the national final of the Greenpower competition to be held at Goodwood race track on October 14.

This is after taking third place in the eastern regional heat of the competition.

It has an eight-speed gearbox and has a team of seven boys, two mechanics and five drivers.

And it is the first time the school has reached the final of the competition, in which 75 teams will compete.

Philip Bannister, head of design and technology at the school, said it was a close call. “We did a very consistent race this time and gradually pulled through the field during the day, only securing third position in the last 15 minutes.”
