A turkey shed containing seven thousand birds was badly damaged yesterday in a farm fire.
The site at Breckles, near Watton, belongs to poultry firm Bernard Matthews and the alarm was raised at 2.44am.
Initially, two fire crews from Watton and East Harling were sent. On arrival they found the 70m by 15m building well alight and called for reinforcements.
Fire service spokesman, Peter Abbs, station manager at Thetford, said: “We had six appliances and a water carrier. There were approximately 7,000 turkeys in the shed of which we saved the vast majority. You are probably looking at two to three hundred, possibly 400 birds out of 7,000 total. The building itself is 50 per cent badly damaged by fire.”
The blaze was put out in just under an hour. An investigation is being held to establish the cause.
