The promised flurries began to fall in eastern Scotland, with late morning snow showers expected to follow over the rest of Britain, including this region, later today.
Bitter easterly winds made temperatures of 2C feel more like -6C in Norfolk and Suffolk, and they could usher in a sprinkling of snow in some parts by lunchtime.
But forecasters said the first cold snap of 2008 was likely to be short-lived, with the wind moving to the south and temperatures rising to 8C by tomorrow.
