Colin King, of Commercial Road in Lowestoft, went missing in September last year. His body was later found in a car on the bottom of Lake Lothing.
An inquest in Lowestoft yesterday heard that Mr King had often spoken to friends about a man who had driven his car into the town's harbour three years before and said that if he were to take his own life, he would drive into the water.
In late October, police carried out an underwater search and found a vehicle which matched the description of the car which was missing from a Yarmouth rental company.
Suffolk coroner Peter Dean said yesterday that the cause of death remains uncertain and recorded an open verdict.
