Engage gears and brain this weekend with science and cycling fun around Norfolk and Suffolk

1 British Science Week begins today and they are already messing with our minds and making a week last 10 days. Events are planned across the country, including a science day in a Norwich Park tomorrow.

The first ever Eaton Park science day runs from 9am to noon.

It is free, for families, and full of fun events including the science of gaming, the science of fitness, the science of motorsports and the chance to discover whether you are a secret scientist.

2 There's more science at the National Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art, Newmarket, right through the extra-long week. The Wow, the Weird and the Wonderful is a science week themed family trail.

New science galleries offer a chance to find out what makes thoroughbred horses such amazing athletes, and families can also have a go at the Breeding a Champion Racehorse game, compare their bones to those of a horse and much more horse and science related horsing around.

3 The Mini Professors of West Norfolk are holding a special session on energy at the Green Britain Centre in Swaffham tomorrow. The Saturday science class for two to five-year-olds will include hands-on activities and should be booked via www.babysensory.com/en/miniprofessorsclassdetails/westnorfolk

4 George's Marvellous Experiments, inspired by the Roald Dahl book George's Marvellous Experiments, includes science experiments to try at home, from concocting slime to creating a volcano. There will also be give-away stickers and bookmarks at a special session of science activities at Waterstones, Castle Street, Norwich, tomorrow from 2-3pm. Book on 01603 767292.

5 Gorleston in Gear is a whole day of fun cycling-themed activities this Sunday. You don't even need a bike as there will be bicycles to borrow for most activities.

The 10am to 3pm day is based around Gorleston Lower Esplanade and includes a family discovery day around the town, with a goody bag for everyone who finishes, plus BMX displays and coaching sessions, maintenance workshops, an adventure course, vintage bikes, bikes that can crush cans, blow up balloons and make smoothies, and learn to ride sessions for children.

6 And there are a wealth of cycling tracks, rides and routes to enjoy throughout East Anglia.

Alton Water, between Ipswich and Manningtree, is Suffolk's largest expanse of open water and the 7.5 mile trail right around the lake is almost entirely off-road.

7 We are renowned for being flat – but that does not mean mountain bikers cannot enjoy Norfolk and Suffolk. Tunstall Forest, near Saxmundham, has a 10 mile red-graded mountain bike trail.

8 The four Thetford Forest cycle trails start from High Lodge, between Thetford and Brandon, and range from the gentle six-mile green route through gently undulating forest and heath to the tough 10 mile black route including very steep rises and descents.

9 Marriott's Way runs from Norwich to Reepham, then to Aylsham, and eventually Wroxham, along three railway lines. Almost the entire route is off-road, with the final section alongside a narrow gauge steam railway. Cycle past rivers and look out for snowdrops, daffodils, primroses – and specially commissioned rail-themed sculptures every mile.

10 Norwich's Sloughbottom Park has a BMX track, ideal for thrill-seeking older children and teenagers.
