A petition calling for Konectbus to save the direct 2/2A service from Norwich to Sheringham has attracted 1,000 signatures.

The route, which travels via Holt, was set up three years ago and will stop running from November 2 because of 'an extended period of losses' for the service, according to the Dereham-based firm.

Following the announcement an online petition to save the 2/2A was launched by the North Norfolk Labour Party which has been signed by 1,000 people.

A similar petition was set up by North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb which has attracted nearly 800 signatures.

Konectbus said in a statement: 'After an extended period of losses on this route, including both commuter periods and the summer season, the decision has been taken to withdraw this service. Another operator already operates various routes on this corridor, meaning most customers will still have access to bus services.'

The route is used by Norwich workers and students.

Sanders Coaches has run the X44 from Norwich to Holt via Horsham St Faith, Hevingham, Aylsham, Cromer, and Sheringham for 20 years and managing director Charles Sanders said it would continue, with possible relief services.

Jono Read from North Norfolk Labour Party said: 'We have big concerns about the impact this will have in November when the service ends. These are very busy services at peak times, and it looks like the soonest other services will be able to change timetables is in January. A prompt service to work, school, or college is essential.'

He added there should have been more talks and consultation before the 2/2A route ended.
