Think of a tropical paradise looking out to the sea and no, we're not talking the Caribbean – but a home with the most awe inspiring view in north Norfolk. Property editor Caroline Culot went to visit 14, Danish House Gardens, Overstrand, for sale for a guide of £600,000 with Watsons Period & Prestige.
The owners of this property in Overstrand fell in love with the view – and snapped up the plot for a new build. So it really was the view which sold it – and it's not hard to see why because wherever you are at the rear of the house, you look out over the garden out to the sea outstretched before you.
You can't put a price on that kind of vista, it's so special and the owners created a home to maximise those panoramic views, putting a large lounge upstairs from where you can walk out onto a balcony to gaze out to the sea and the most fantastic sunsets one can imagine. Watching the waves and the ships in the distance has created many a night's entertainment – forget putting the TV on, instead the owners settle down for the best show on earth which changes every day and every night.
The garden was also incredibly important to the owners because it forms part of the view and gives pleasure when wandering down to the bottom to breathe in that sea air. Being next to the golf course, the owners mirrored the curve in the shape of the garden which is very impressive, even at this time of year, because it resembles a tropical garden with lots of interesting and colourful plants, grasses, trees and shrubs. Tall cordylines give a palm tree look to this garden which also was created using imported soil and there's even a water feature running over beach pebbles and stones.
Interestingly, if you are wondering about the curious name of this address, that is because there really once was a Danish House on the site. The Danish House pavilion, was a grand home and began its life at the Parish Exposition in 1900 and was moved to Overstrand a year later, then known as 'the north Norfolk village of millionaires.' The house in all its glory was seen by a Lady Elizabeth Lewis at the Paris exhibition and her husband bought it and moved it to what was a four acre plot in Overstrand where it incorporated a courtyard, stables, kitchen wing and an entrance reached by a covered walkway. In its time, the Prince of Wales and Oscar Wilde are said to have visited but in 1951 the house was badly damaged by fire and replaced by a motel and then the plot became available for the building of the bungalows which now exist there. So that's the history!
Inside the property for sale has a lovely fitted kitchen which includes a built in breakfast table and there are sliding doors to the garden. You also have a separate dining room, also with sliding doors to the garden, three bedrooms and a study/fourth bedroom. Upstairs is where the view really comes into play with a large sitting room with four Velux windows which open up and out as well as giving access to a balcony. Truly awe inspiring – and who needs to jet out of the UK to find paradise?...
