10) Another outbreak of Victoriana, this time at Great Plumstead School, also celebrating its centenary in 1977. Headmistress Mrs Scarlett Trafford and teacher Mrs Hilda Billinghurst had dressed for the occasion in long skirt and high-collared blouse and are seen here with their pupils, girls in calico bonnets and pleated smocks, boys in knee-length shorts.

Until relatively recently, even small villages in Norfolk and Suffolk could boast a primary school.

These buildings were more than places of learning; they were regarded as the heart of the community and well loved and used by everyone, not just children.

These photos from the EDP archive provide a snapshot of educational provision in the mid-20th century, on the cusp of change.
