When he asked his cruel masters how he could provide for his family, he was told: 'Go and eat your books.' Derek James looks at the harsh life and times of kindly and brilliant bishop of Norwich Joseph Hall.

This is the story of former Tower of London prisoner, the 'delinquent' Bishop Joseph Hall and of one man's 12-month quest to find his 'lost' burial site at Norwich Cathedral.

Next week historian and author David Berwick will be telling the fascinating story of the troubled life and times of Joseph Hall, a truly brilliant man and bishop of Norwich from 1641 to 1656.

It was a story which finally came together thanks to the Eastern Daily Press.

Our pictures, of what was described as a unique reinterred ceremony at the cathedral in 1975, were the final pieces of the jigsaw.

'The 12-month investigation was finally over. It was a joyous and emotional moment,' said David, a 66-year-old retired print executive who lives in the city and has been researching the tale of Bishop Hall who lived in turbulent times.

Find out more about Bishop Joseph Hall and his troubled life in the EDP Sunday supplement in this Saturday's EDP.

David Berwick will be giving an illustrated talk about Bishop Hall's life and times in Norwich Cathedral library on Tuesday at 1pm. The talk is free but donations for library funds would be gratefully received. If you would like to go telephone the library staff in advance on 01603 218443 or e-mail library@cathedral.org.uk
