The thud, thud, thud of hundreds of people stamping their feet to keep warm in the coldest winter since 1740 was replaced by cheers and sunny smiles in Norwich half a century ago.
Men, women and children braved the arctic conditions of the bone-chilling start to 1963 to wait for the arrival of the Queen Mother who had been determined to make the journey from Sandringham through ice and snow to come to Norwich.
She was in the city on January 19 1963 to open the controversial Norwich Central Library – a symbol of the swinging 60s. Some hated the bold design while others loved it.
But like it or loathe it, it was the Queen Mother the people of Norwich had come to see on that freezing Saturday 50 years ago when the city and county was held tight in an icy grip with a bitterly cold east wind blowing a gale.
