Two generations laid a poppy wreath together outside a small village school for Armistice Day.

Eric Allaway, 88, from Felmingham, a governor of Colby, made the mark of remembrance today with 10-year-old pupils Evie-Jane Riseley and Kallum Currie.

The poignant ceremony, surrounded by Aylsham Royal British Legion standard bearers, was preceded by an Armistice-themed assembly created by three classes of seven-11-year-olds.

Original poems about the First World War and the importance of wearing a poppy, songs and a two minutes' silence were included in the remembrance event.

Mr Allaway served in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry at the end of the Second World War.

He praised the children and said: 'It is important to be grateful for the peace we live in today.'

Headteacher Christine Mead said the assembly was the highlight of the school year and taught the respect, pride and confidence.
