Back in 1976, from our home in Reepham, we started the charity then called Anorexic Family Aid, later to become Eating Disorders Association and then BEAT.
In those days very few doctors ever recognised anorexia, although the illness had been around for hundreds of years. To be fair to all medics, anorexics are past masters at denial and can use clever techniques to disguise their weight.
This is why family and friends need to be included in any self help treatment, they are in the front line and can influence behaviour at any age.
Congratulations to BEAT for their constant hard work and for the training they initiate throughout the county helping to give confidence to their ambassadors like Eliza Moyes.
I believe that BEAT is still the only national charity to have its head office in Norwich, where with the help of local support we started 40 years ago.
