Opinion: Sharon Griffiths is at one with Richard Dawkins - life's too short to waste time matching socks.

Matchy matchy is so boring…

Matching earrings are uncool, says Kate Moss, following a trend set by Gwyneth Paltrow (of course) and Ivanka Trump. 'Nobody wears pairs of earrings any more. It's old-fashioned.'

Well, at least that's solved the problem of all those widowed single earrings lurking on the dressing table. Wear them mis-matched with pride.

I don't know about earrings, but our family has long believed that non-matchings socks and gloves keep you just as warm. This is a belief shared by scientist Richard Dawkins who apparently believes life's too short to find socks that match. Quite right. Just think of the time he must save.

But why do so many packs of socks come in three or five different colours? That's just asking for trouble. There's always going to be one black, one grey and one blue lurking in the the laundry basket. At least with ten socks the same you have a fighting chance of finding two that match.

Husband memorably once went out in mis-matched shoes. He was taken ill and, looking at his feet, the ambulancemen thought he was joking…

They should have known he was really a trend-setter.
