Opinion: Another week, another new cookery show. So why are we cooking less?, asks Rachel Moore
A new TV cooking programme was announced this week, with 'celebrity' chefs and cooks invading our home space more and more.
But are we spending more time cooking in the kitchen?
The rise of Deliveroo, Hungry Horse and other delivery services, takeaways and supermarket ready meals would suggest otherwise. We spend hours watching other people doing it but can't be bothered to do it ourselves.
We sit with full of sugar and salt microwave TV diners on the sofa watching a programme about cooking from scratch, but never do it, because we're sitting watching.
Mary Berry, at 82, is to front the new Britain's Best Cook as lead judge.
Presented by the BBC's highest-paid female Claudia Winkleman, 10 contestants will compete for the title to encourage the millions munching their way through frozen lasagne to start proper home cooking.
Berry is having the last laugh, with a soaring career - her new series Secrets from Britain's Great Houses will be made this year - when others her age are in retirement homes, the personification of the benefits of cooking from scratch.
