The sadly-defunct Hacienda nightclub in Manchester has hosted some of the most famous – and infamous – parties in history.

The Smiths, Madonna and, of course, New Order all played there in the halcyon days of the 1980s.

But there is only one plaque on the wall of the luxury flats that now stand in its place. It reads: 'James first gigged here 17 November 1982.'

James have spanned numerous scenes from baggy to Britpop and hold a special place in countless music fans' hearts. And at Henham Park they delighted revellers with a set brimming with hits and plenty of new stuff as well.

'Sometimes' and 'Come Home' had the packed BBC Music Stage jumping but the loudest cheers were reserved for majestic versions of 'Laid' and 'Born of Frustration'. And 'Out To Get You' – as it slowly grows from a quite delicate song to a monster – also sprang from the stage and had the crowd in raptures. The only disappointment from the packed tent came right at the end when James didn't come back out for an encore, and thus didn't play biggest hit 'Sit Down'.

Tim Booth and his band are not as young as they were. But they can still conduct an almighty singalong.
