Today's youngsters spend hours just on their computers playing games, watching television or on their mobile phones.

I was born in 1942 - no TV, computers, no telephones of any sort. Mum didn't drive, or very few did, so what did we do?

Actually lots.

I was the eldest of three girls, we coloured in books, read books, traced a lot (special tracing paper is still available today) and by tracing a picture or object in a book we then turned it over and with our pencil pencilled roughly over, turned it back over by going over it again onto anything, even a white linen, we got the outline on. We could then paint it or embroider it. Also I've painted jam jars and then put flowers in them.

As we were girls my second sister and I would knit clothes for our dolls and sew little blankets and pillows for their prams.

Not all girlie things either, outside we climbed trees, standing or fallen trees, we skipped, played hopscotch, played footie with the boys, rode our bikes. All good fun too.

Certainly we slept well at nights, usually after a good wash down at the kitchen table.
