Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists have been having their say after a Lakenheath man, who was caught going 154mph on the A11, was sentenced to a 56 day driving ban.

A young man from Suffolk has been banned from driving for 56 days after being caught going more than double the national speed limit on the A11 southbound at Iklingham.

Louie Howlett's first driving offence has garnered substantial attention as police have now launched an appeal against the sentence.

Insp David Giles from Norfolk and Suffolk roads policing unit said: 'There can be no excuses and I'm not condoning speeding at all, but we're faced with a world here that someone can get caught four times doing less than 40mph and get a ban for far longer than someone doing 154mph.'

Police and crime commissioner for Norfolk, Lorne Green, described Howlett's speed as 'absolutely outrageous'.

On top of the 56 day driving ban, the 21-year-old was handed a £250 fine, plus additional costs bringing the total he owed the court to £365.

Comments on the Eastern Daily Press website and Facebook page about the sentencing have included:

• I hope the sentence is increased, an eight week ban is absolutely laughable. Warrants at least 12 months minimum and a retest.

• Because as usual the punishment seldom fits the crime and in this case it's far too lenient both in terms of the fine imposed and ban. Perhaps a substantial fine plus 56 months imprisonment followed by a 56 month ban might help him realise and then a mandatory retest before he ever gets behind the wheel again.

• Does seem to have to got off very lightly, mind you it has to be said that to get 154mph out of a Seat Leon takes some doing, should have been on a race track though.

• People are getting far too excited by this. The 70mph limit was introduced to reduce fuel consumption, not for safety reasons. Cars were driven safely at 200mph on the M1 in the 1960s and it remains completely legal on most German motorways today. And their safety figures are very similar to ours.

• I see no mention of points on his license, so this conviction will not affect his Insurance Premium. 56 days is absolutely disgraceful, should have been 5 years. This sends a poor message to other lunatics on the road, no deterrent whatsoever.

• That was dangerous and reckless driving. A 12 month prison sentence and a 2 year ban plus fines would seem more appropriate. I am pleased to hear that the sentence has been appealed as too lenient.

• What hasn't been mentioned is that this length of ban also triggers him having to retake his test. There is no mention of road conditions either. I've lost count of how many times I've followed somebody driving at 2/3 of the permitted limit (40 in a 60) only to hit a village whereby they sail on at 40 in a built up area. To my mind, these sorts of drivers pose more risk of injuring / killing somebody than a young lad speeding on a clear, open road without driveways / pedestrians in the vicinity.

• Interesting, whilst I believe that motorists in general tend to get a raw deal with stuff, I think this lad should be seeing a minimum one year ban with re-test with a heavier fine. I'm pretty sure proportionately you'd get a lot harsher for doing 40 in a 30 zone.

• I know it doesn't sound like justice but his insurance will now be absolutely astronomical, might even price him off the road. I'd imagine many thousands per year increase now.

• If he was on a motorcycle he would have lost his license for years! Too lenient in my opinion.
