The charity was formed in 1927 to raise funds for The Queen's Nursing Institute, which founded district nursing. 600 gardens opened with an entrance fee of just a shilling with children free. In the first year £8,000 was raised and the National Garden Scheme (NGS) was born.

On Sunday and Monday gardens in Marshland St James, Brandon Parva, Stiffkey and West Beckham will take part in celebrating the milestone as they open their gates to the public.

Opening on Sunday Bank House in Marshland St James is new to the scheme. This exuberantly planted two-acre garden has a wide range of growing conditions from damp shade to dry gravel so plenty of ideas to take away.

Also open on Sunday is The Old Rectory at Brandon Parva which has four-acres of garden compartments showcasing pergolas covered in roses, wisteria and clematis with plenty of beautiful mixed borders. You can even have a game of croquet on an immaculate lawn.

Warborough House in Stiffkey is also open on Sunday and has seven colourful acres which include a woodland walk, shrub borders, formal terraces and a walled kitchen garden.

Lastly on Bank Holiday Monday Chestnut Farm in West Beckham is open. It is a favourite garden for plantaholics with plenty of rare shrubs and trees to seek out.

All the gardens will have home-made teas and several have plants for sale.
