Seven Solos made a rare appearance for the first Solo Open meeting on Wroxham Broad for many years, most of whom were visitors.

They faced a stiff northerly enlivened by heavy if not torrential rain for the first of their three Sunday races, which saw the odd capsize and a couple of retirements, and a win for Matt Frary over Alan Bishop, who established themselves as the ones to beat.

In the event, nobody did, although they exchanged places for the second race, by which time the rain had passed on although the wind, if anything, was stronger. The third, and deciding, race saw Frary take first gun.

Sam Woodcock proved best of the rest despite capsizing near the clubhouse during the second race and thereby effectively losing any chance of catching the leaders, a point ahead of Roger Wilson and Robert Laurie, but all three were well adrift of Frary and Bishop.

Meanwhile a flotilla of Norfolks were sailing their Yare SC Trophy races on the Broad, the first two in gentle winds on Saturday, the other two as related on Sunday. It proved an Edwards family fiesta, with Kevin and younger daughter Pippa winning all four races and the main trophy and Clementi Smith Trophy for goods measure.

In their wake father Derek, crewed by daughter-in-law Jo on Saturday and grand-daughter Ellis on Sunday, took second place in the first three races before finally succumbing to Geoff Coulthard in the last.

The turnout was the lowest I can recall for the class, barring an earlier meeting last month when there was only one potential starter.

Two races were sailed at Buckenham Sailing Club in variable winds and heavy rain. In the first race, Javelin Robbers Dog, sailed by Chris Skedge and Chris Clitheroe made good use of their spinnaker on the long reaches and finished well ahead of Arry sailed by Bill Clark and daughter Hannah. Robbers Dog kept their first place on corrected time, but Crispin Lambert in Solo Skybird moved to second on corrected time.

In the second race, Bill Clark was crewed by Ben Adams and they finished well ahead of Skybird in second place.

Next Sunday, Buckenham sailors hold their annual down river race to Hardley Mill and back.
